Eligibility criteria

Applicants must be at least 25 years old and have at least five years of experience as a professional journalist.

For non-EU citizens, an application does not constitute a student visa. You may only apply for a student visa after you have been selected by the foundation. This notification arrives around May.

Knowledge of German is welcome but not mandatory.

Fellows agree to spend two academic semesters (from October to July) as exchange students at Freie Universität Berlin and to attend courses and lectures at Berlin’s universities. (Please note: It is not possible to obtain a university degree by attending the EJF program.)

Fellows also pursue their own research projects while attending bi-weekly guest lectures ("Jour fixe") and workshops on Wednesdays on campus, as well as various activities between semesters.
