Anna Helfer (Freie Universität Berlin): “Friendship as institutional critique: Reflections on transcultural collaborations on Senegalese art collections in German Museums”
This talk is part of the Berlin Anthropology Seminars.
The presentation explores the collaborative research and curatorial work of Ken Aicha Sy and researcher Anna Helfer, focusing on the legacy of Senegalese modernism and its erasure from local cultural memory in Dakar, Senegal. Through Ken Aicha Sy’s project, Survival Kit, they began working together, addressing the dispersal of artworks from the École de Dakar to European institutions and interrogating the politics of restitution, representation, and epistemic sovereignty. Their practice—spanning exhibitions, publications, and education—foregrounds friendship and care as both methodology and political tool in decolonial artistic research.
