Agostina Gagliolo (FU Berlin): Being in Common: HIV Prevention, Belonging and Care in Buenos Aires
Since 2021, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), an antiretroviral medication used to prevent HIV transmission, has been available through Argentina’s public health system as part of the broader strategy known as Combination Prevention. Within this increasingly biomedical prevention framework, PrEP has largely been approached as a tool for individual risk management. Recent literature, however, shows that practices around it often exceed individual responsibility, extending into solidarity and care for others. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork at an LGBTQ+ civil association and Combination Prevention Center in Buenos Aires, this talk approaches the circulation of this pharmaceutical as it takes part in the enactment of what a group of self-identified gay men describe as a collectively inhabited environment. Along the way, PrEP becomes laden with affect, enabling some relations and interrupting others, and thereby transforming what is conceived as possibilities of belonging. Three movements help trace these connections: the ways in which PrEP becomes known and explained to others; how it comes to bear on participation in certain parties and gatherings; and how it is folded into individual and collective ways of managing risk and caring for the self and others. Attending to these movements brings into view the relational and collective texture through which PrEP comes to matter, further troubling accounts of HIV prevention as an individual undertaking focused on pharmaceutical rollout. The closure of the association in May 2025, amid the ongoing dismantling of public health infrastructure in Argentina, throws into relief how sustaining HIV prevention is inseparable from the collective fabric through which resources take on relevance and meaning, and how this is seriously jeopardized when community-based spaces are dismantled.

A Conceptual Journey through the Affective Dynamics of Mass Protest and Their Aftermaths – Cairo, Istanbul, Berlin
Ricarda Ameling, bahar firat und Cilja Harders (Freie Universität Berlin), Bilgin Ayata und Derya Özkaya (Universität Graz), Dina Wahba (Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut, Freiburg) Sprache: Englisch This lecture traces a long-term conceptual and empirical journey that began with the mass uprisings in Cairo (2011) and Istanbul (2013) and continues into the present. Drawing on collaborative research conducted within and beyond the CRC since 2015, we revisit how moments of collective rupture, hope, and exhaustion shape political transformation—and how their affective dynamics are later captured, redirected, and governed. Our work deliberately set out to decenter dominant narratives of revolution and resistance by moving beyond iconic sites such as Tahrir Square and Gezi Park to provincial cities such as Tanta and Eskişehir. Through interviews, city walks, participant observation, and focus groups, we developed an empirically grounded approach to affect that takes everyday experiences seriously and allows for theorizing from the Global South. This methodological and conceptual orientation enabled a sustained dialogue between affect theory—often shaped in Euro-American academic contexts—and the lived realities of activists, residents, and political actors in Egypt and Turkey. The lecture will introduce key concepts which emerged from this research trajectory and situates their conceptual legacy within ongoing debates on protest, power, and political emotions across regions. Die Westsahara ist Afrikas letzte Kolonie. Der Vortrag untersucht die blockierte Dekolonisierung und ihre kolonialen Kontinuitäten, die sich unter anderem in der Unterstützung der marokkanischen Besatzung durch geopolitische Mächte, der Ausbeutung der natürlichen Ressourcen des Landes und dem anhaltenden Silencing in Politik und Wissenschaft manifestieren. Gleichzeitig wird die Staatlichkeit der Demokratischen Arabischen Republik Sahara (DARS) zwischen marokkanischer Besatzung, den befreiten Gebieten und dem Exil beleuchtet. Dr. Maja Zwick ist Soziologin und promovierte an der Freien Universität Berlin. Sie forscht zur Westsahara sowie zu Flucht und Migration aus dekolonialer Perspektive. Dafür hat sie längere Zeit in den saharauischen Flüchtlingslagern in Algerien gelebt und gearbeitet.
