The Center for Media and Information Literacy (CeMIL) at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies is the umbrella organization supporting media literacy initiatives at Freie Universität Berlin. Media literacy is essential for understanding digitally shaped societies and for democratic media practices. By “media literacy,” we refer to the critical and reflective engagement with all forms and contents of media—regardless of whether they concern platforms or journalism, including information and digital literacy.

CeMIL brings together projects in media literacy, including a pilot project for training prospective teachers at the Department of Political and Social Sciences. Its aim is also to establish a structure for coordinating and implementing a wide range of media literacy offerings for various target groups such as multipliers, teachers, and educational practitioners.

For teaching, professional development, and reflection, CeMIL curates free downloadable materials. In addition, its staff participate in international exchange and network projects as well as in research projects related to media literacy.
