Prof. Thomas Risse und Prof. Tanja Börzel mit Vortrag und Interview zum Thema "Governance Without Hierarchy?" an der SOAS University

News vom 23.05.2016

Dr. Leslie Vinjamuri of SOAS University interviews Professors Tanja Börzel and Thomas Risse of the Otto-Suhr-Institute for Political Science, Freie Universität Berlin on "Governance Without Hierarchy? Effective and Legitimate in Areas of Limited Statehood". Europeanization as well as the diffusion of European ideas and policies within and outside the EU have contributed toward the redefinition of statehood. In particular, regionalism has provided means of limiting state power. Arguably, state monopoly over the means of violence or it’s ability to make and implement policies are currently shared with global and regional governance institutions. However, limited statehood is not an ungoverned space where anarchy and chaos prevail. The provision of collective goods and services is possible even under adverse conditions of fragile or failed statehood. In fact, external governance actors can enhance the capacity of authority structures in weak states, or directly contribute to the provision of collective goods and services. Professor Dr. Tanja A. Börzel and Professor Thomas Risse discussed their recent research on these matters.
