The number and scope of international and regional organizations has rapidly expanded over the last couple of decades, and there are few areas of international politics today that are not regulated in one way or another by everything from informal norms to formal organizations. This seminar provides you with a greater understanding of the scientific study of institutionalized international and regional cooperation. It is not a course about a set of specific international and regional organizations, but a course that explores under what conditions international institutions are created, the functions they serve, and the international and domestic factors that impact their operations and shape their effectiveness across such disparate and diverse policy areas as security, trade, development, human rights, and the environment.
