Research Placement: Qualitative Methods (Interviews and Text Analysis) for Gender Research [30221]

Course Description

Overall aim and content: In this Research Placement, students will learn how to conduct qualitative research with a focus on conducting and analyzing interviews and the analysis of text more generally. The aim is for students to gain both theoretical and practical insights into the different steps of the research process. Students’ projects should be related to the overall theme of “Gender, Diversity and Science” and focus on one of two sub-themes: (1) gender and diversity aspects of academic careers in EU countries and (2) Internationalization (mobility) in academia.

Tentative structure of the course: The course will combine mini-lectures with in-class discussion and hands-on practice sessions. This will allow students to gain research experience and discuss the methodological challenges they encounter in conducting a research project. We will discuss how to ask research questions, develop questions for interviews, and analyze interviews and other texts using the software MAXQDA (accessible through the FU).

Graduate Seminar: Gender, Knowledge, Science, and Power [30216]

Course Description

Gender, science and organizations is one of the areas in which we have witnessed uneven developments towards intersectional gender equity. Despite the progress of gender equity in education and among university students, women remain underrepresented across academic leadership positions and among scientists, particularly in STEM fields in many countries. This seminar explores social science theories to explain this unevenness, including interdisciplinary explanations for how academia has been an institution highly resistant to change. We will explore how the very production of knowledge is gendered, and what policy instruments have been used to challenge gendered power in science and academia.

Course Description
