Berlin Talks by FUBiS & FU-BEST

News vom 13.09.2021

Welcome to Berlin Talks

The international programs FU-BEST (European Studies) and FUBiS (International Summer and Winter University) will present an online panel discussion entitled „Populism and the Future of Democracy in Europe“ on Thursday, September 16, at 7 PM CET. The discussion will focus on four experts (Dr. Catherine Fieschi, Nicole Loew, Prof. Dr. Sebastian Büttner, Dr. Kai-Olaf Lang), whose research and publications deal with the phenomenon of populism in politics and society.

What forms of populism are there and why are we experiencing this phenomenon particularly strongly in our time? What role do dynamics such as globalization, migration, and nationalism play in this context? What effects do populist trends in politics and society have on the political cultures of the European countries concerned? How has the corona pandemic affected the phenomenon of populism? Should populism be seen primarily as a threat, or does it also open up new, useful insights into the dynamics of political development in Europe? These and other questions will be the focus of the panel discussion.

The event will be held in English and will be broadcast live from the Academic Senate Hall of Freie Universität Berlin. Online viewers are invited to participate via the chat option with questions and comments. A recording of the panel discussion will later be made available on this website as well as on the YouTube channels of the organizing programs FU-BEST and FUBiS. (Please note: Only the panelists will be recorded, not the audience.).
