Discription:

TRANSENS is a collaborative project in which 17 research teams from nine German and two Swiss universities and institutions are working together. Research in TRANSENS is transdisciplinary: The interested public and other non-academic actors are integrated in a planned way into research contexts, specifically into Transdisciplinary Work Packages (TAP):

  • HAFF: Capacity for action and flexibility in a reversible process
  • SAFE: Safety Case: Stakeholder Perspectives and Transdisciplinarity
  • TRUST: Technology, uncertainties, complexity and trust
  • DIPRO: Dialogues and Process Design in Interaction of Law, Justice and Governance

The possibilities of transdisciplinary research in nuclear waste management are systematically reflected in the research association (transdisciplinarity research). Special activities are aimed at promoting young researchers and maintaining competence.

Dialogues and process design in interaction of law, justice and governance (TAP DIPRO)

The search for a site for a repository is a complex undertaking worldwide. Different interests of stakeholders contribute to different interpretations of the problem and the emergence of conflicts. Approaches to an ideal solution (so-called "clumsy solutions") demand compromises from all actors - compromises that are important in the short, medium and long term. Given the complexity of the project, the legal framework, the forms of political regulation and the sense of justice intertwine rationally and emotionally in ways that can be both supportive and inhibiting. However, dialogic clarifications, political frameworks and legal cornerstones for dealing with high-level radioactive waste, and civil society engagement can decisively improve the conditions for success. On the basis of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, the interested public and stakeholders will therefore be involved in workshops in order to be able to generate both political and scientific findings for a successful process design accompanied by the media.

Current report from DIPRO (2021): "Transdisziplinäre Entsorgungsforschung am Start" (PDF)

Formative and reflective monitoring of transdisciplinary disposal research

In the planned collaborative project, the two central questions are, first, how a transdisciplinary research process should be designed and, second, what 'added value' can be created compared to traditional disciplinary or interdisciplinary research (i.e., without the participation of non-specialists). Furthermore, an accompanying investigation takes place, which enables a "formative", i.e. directed at the improvement of the current project, and professional (self-)observation by inter- and transdisciplinary specialists as well as a theoretical-conceptual self-reflection, i.e. "transdisciplinarity research" is carried out.

Predecessor project: SOTEC-radio

From 2017 to 2020, TRANSENS team members were already conducting research on the socio-technical challenges of final disposal as part of the SOTEC-radio project. Many of the research strands presented in the final report are now being taken up again under TRANSENS
