Media and journalism in exile - interview processing and qualitative data analysis (Prof. Dr. Carola Richter and PD Dr. Anna Litvinenko)

In a research project at the division International Communication, qualitative interviews will be conducted with various groups of exiled journalists in Germany in fall 2024. The focus is on their professional situation, their role perception and on how they deal with difficult contextual conditions.

The interviews will primarily be conducted in the native languages of the exiled journalists. These are Turkish, Russian, Belarusian, Farsi (Iran), Arabic (Syria and Egypt), and Pashtu and Dari (Afghanistan). After that, interviews are translated into English using AI.

Students in the project will have access to this material and can also use it for a Master's thesis, if interested. In the project module itself, the first task will be to process the interview material after the AI has translated it. Language skills in the above-mentioned languages would be particularly helpful, but are not a prerequisite for taking part in the project. As a second task, the students develop an analysis matrix by reviewing the interviews and pretest it. The matrix will later be used to qualitatively and comparatively analyze the material.

The project module can also be taken in combination with the course “Media and Journalism in Exile” in the Master PuK/PolKomm during winter term 2024/25.

Team size: 1-3 students
