Since the turn of the century, state policies and technologies regarding dissent have transfigured considerably. Drawing on experiences and insights from Egypt and Turkey, this panel explores how such changes invite us to re-think resistance, policing, and power in the contemporary Middle East and beyond.

This roundtable will take place at AL.Berlin. A limited number of seats is available for registered participants.

Deniz Yonucu is a social anthropologist and has been working on political dissent, counterinsurgency, and statecraft in the Turkish context. Alongside her articles in prestigious journals, her monograph titled Police, Provocation, Politics, is forthcoming from Cornell University Press in Spring 2022.

Adham Youssef is a journalist and researcher. He has covered human rights issues for Daily News Egypt from 2014 to 2020, contributed to several media outlets, such as Mada Masr, the Guardian, and the Nation, and is currently enrolled in an MA program at FU Berlin.

Hossam Elhamalawy is a journalist and activist from Egypt.

Erol Saglam is a social anthropologist working on the transformations of statecraft and law at the intersections of masculinities, conspiracy theories and societal violence. Following his doctoral studies at Birkbeck, University of London with his research on nationalist communities of Turkey, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Stockholm University and is now a lecturer at Istanbul Medeniyet University.


This roundtable is organized jointly with the International Research Group on Authoritarianism and Counter-Strategies at Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and AL.Berlin. It is part of the AL.Festival.2021.
